The Drupal Content Management System
Drupal is an open-source Content Management System which has been in development since 2001. It currently powers thousands of websites and intranets, has won many awards (including the 2008 Open Source CMS Award) and has the backing of a very large world wide community of developers.
Breathe Communications found that when we were doing our Business Analysis for clients that we were selecting Drupal over and over again as the best solution. We have built a range of sites from smaller ones through to large highly customised sites, such as www.beehive.govt.nz and www.nzskillsconnect.co.nz, and Breathe Communications’ web developers are now some of New Zealand’s most experienced Drupal coders.
Why we think Drupal is the bee’s knees
- It’s free! Because it is open source, there are no licensing costs
- The website structure can be based upon both a hierarchal navigation structure or a flexible category system, which makes Drupal excellent for both small and large websites (this flexibility enables sites to be built with a whole variety of navigation methods)
- Simple administration - intuitive and user-friendly
- Flexible - it’s built on a highly extensible and modular framework which makes it easy to add functionality where required using either out-of-the-box or custom-built/modified modules
- A large library of plug and play modules, including community forums, blogs, event calendars and many more
- Scalable - from 1 page to a million
- Standards compliant - fully XHTML compliant
- Template freedom - no restrictions on the look and feel of your site – i.e. a customisable layout
- RSS-feeds
- A large developer community that releases security patches as threats arise
